The Degree Trap: How to Ensure Your Child’s College is Legit (Before You Pay a Rupee)
Imagine the moment: Your child graduates from university after three or four years of hard work. The gown, the cap, the proud family photos. Now imagine, a few weeks later, they apply for their dream job or a master’s program, only to be told, “Sorry, this degree isn’t valid.”
It sounds like a nightmare, but for thousands of students across India, it becomes a reality every year. They unknowingly enroll in “self-styled” universities that look prestigious on glossy brochures but hold zero value in the eyes of the government.
This week, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) stepped in to stop this before it starts. In a crucial advisory released on January 13, 2026, the board has issued a warning to all Class 10 and 12 students: Verify before you verify.
The Problem: “Self-Styled” Universities
In the rush of admissions, parents often look at campus infrastructure, placement promises, and fee structures. However, a critical check is often missed: Is the university recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC)?
The UGC is the statutory body in India that validates university degrees. If a college or university is not on their approved list, the degree they issue is essentially just a piece of paper. It cannot be used for government jobs, higher studies, or employment in reputable companies.
The CBSE Advisory: What Parents Need to Know
The advisory isn’t just a suggestion; it’s a call to action. CBSE has directed schools to:
- Counsel students about the risks of fake universities.
- Display the advisory on notice boards.
- Discuss this at Parent-Teacher Meetings (PTMs).
But as a parent, you don’t need to wait for a PTM. You can take control of this verification process yourself.
The Solution: A 5-Minute Verification Check
You don’t need to be an education expert to spot a fake. You just need to follow this simple process before paying any admission fees:
- Visit the Official Source: Go to the UGC website at www.ugc.ac.in.
- Find the Lists: Look for the section titled “HEI” (Higher Educational Institutions).
- Check the Status: The UGC regularly publishes a list of “Fake Universities”. Check if the college you are considering is on that “Blacklist.”
- Verify Recognition: Conversely, search for the college in the “Recognized Universities” list (State, Central, Private, or Deemed). If it’s not there, it’s a red flag.
A Smooth Transition to the Future
The transition from Class 12 to university is one of the most fragile times in a student’s life. The pressure to “get in somewhere” can lead to hasty decisions. By taking a moment to verify the legal status of a university, you are protecting not just your money, but your child’s most valuable asset: their time.
Let’s ensure that the hard work they put into their board exams pays off with a degree that opens doors, not one that closes them.
